If you’re looking for a cheap solution, there are a couple of options included with your Oracle license. These are File-Based Data Import (FBDI) and Application Development Framework Desktop Integration (ADFdi). One of the great things about these solutions is they are protected by the security features of Oracle Cloud ERP – something your IT team will appreciate. However, on the other hand, they will require regular re-testing and patching. 

FBDI is best suited to migration loads with a large, static data set. It is also useful when making updates to existing data in Oracle Cloud ERP. One of the major issues with FBDI is that there are inconsistencies in functionality across the different FBDI templates. In addition, the templates are designed with technical users in mind, so End Users may find them challenging to work with. In fact, many End Users will probably find it easier to use the standard Oracle user interface to input data. Another problem is the updates rely on batch processes to run so are not realtime.

ADFdi in comparison may seem more suited to End Users, but it offers limited end-user forms and limited seeded templates from Oracle. Functionality is limited too; from stringent limits to record numbers and restrictions, to not being able to move columns around, to users only being able to show lists of values one field at a time. So while at first glance ADFdi may appear user friendly, it has a frustratingly limited scope and there are limitations when dealing with parent child hierarchies.  

Oracle APEX

Apex can be used to enhance your Cloud ERP experience, however identifying a developer with the right skills and experience can be difficult. You will also have to subscribe to another Oracle service, so it isn’t free for ERP Cloud. It may be a useful way to align business processes with a data entry method rather than the standard end user forms, but it’s not really ideal for mass data entry.  It can upload .csv files and then call a webservice to load the data, but that’s not really a win over Oracle’s other offerings listed above.  Like any development effort, it requires more time, money and involves additional risk. Plus, it will need ongoing support.
